Ashildr and Lady Me
I’ve increasingly been refering to the character as “Me”, accepting her choice, however much it was the antithesis to what the Doctor did when he chose his name. A name might be a promise here too, but it’s a promise of her own solitude, her merciless independence, her lack of compassion for the world around her. But she is very firm about no longer being Ashildr, denying it over and over again, and even the credits refer to her as Me. All of that begs us to listen to her.
But I don’t think we actually know her wishes by the end of the episode. From the moment she starts caring, she begins answering to the name of the girl who died. “You are an extraordinary woman, Ashildr” and “Ashildr, I think I’m very glad I saved you”, the Doctor tells her and she accepts both of these statements, smiling at him.
Her other names died with whoever knew her, but there is someone who knows her now. She’s no longer singular, without an attachment, nothing at all to describe her. Instead, she has chosen her path: the patron saint of the Doctor’s leftovers.
When we first met her, she was Ashildr, daughter of Einarr. In our more recent encounter, she was Lady Me, nothing to nobody, nobody being anything to her. It will be interesting to see who she is if we see her again. And what name she will go by.
